Planet Riders

Description

There is no doubting that Planet Riders is one of the most impressive looking downloadable games for mobile and the game-play doesn't disappoint either!

After downloading the game you can select between English, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish languages which I thought was a nice touch.

There are then three options for the style of game which are Single Race, Tournament and Time Attack but before you start any I would recommend taking five minutes to go through the tutorial because this game does get some getting used to. Stay with it though!

After you have gone through the tutorial I would start off in Tournament mode. This takes you through the first five tracks of the inner solar system, Mercury, Venus, Earth, The Moon and Mars. The courses get progressively harder (and cooler) the further you are away from the sun and since Mercury is a fairly simple course it will help you get used to the controls.

Before you start you get to choose between several different Jet Racers all of which have their own characteristics and there are also some pretty mean looking jets you can unlock at later stages of the game.

You can control your Jet Racer by either using the joystick on your mobile or the keypad although I personally found the keypad the easier of the two options.

Along the courses there are various power-ups which you have to fly through to collect to boost your speed, weaponry and shields. There are three main types of weapon – missiles, lasers and mines although use them wisely because you’ll soon run out! Your shields will deplete if you are either hit by one of your opponents or crash into the sides of the course although rather than exploding and going to game over when your shields hit zero you simply come to a rest for a few moments before your shields are replenished.

A handy vertical bar on the right hand side of the screen tells you your position in the race whilst at the bottom of the screen you have a Speedometer and Shield Indicator.

Verdict – Unless you are not keen on racing style games then this is a great game which you will play again and again. The graphics are awesome for a mobile game and the overall game play is great. It does take some getting used to before you really feel in control of your vehicle but all-in-all this is awesome.....and it's free!!!
